Meet the team
Gavin - The guy that started it
Hi I'm Gavin, Killie Striders founder and motivational leader. I've always enjoyed running be it on the track, road, cross country or just because it get's me from A to B that much quicker. For me running is a foundation on which many sports and forms of exercise are based and 'cracking' it opens up an abundance of exercising opportunities. It is the purest and simplest form of exercise, as everyone can do and has done it at some point in their lives. However for many people, these memories have faded and they now struggle with the demands it places on both body and mind. 'I can't run' and 'running is boring' are two of the most common phrases I hear.
At the Killie Striders we pride ourselves on fun, effective and motivational training aimed at helping our members achieve what they never thought possible and creating a 'can do' attitude.
Heather - Leader
Hi Folks My name is Heather, and I help Gavin out by acting as a motivator for the Improvers group. I began running with the Killie Striders in May 2010, after countless unsuccessful attempts at "running" either on my own or with a friend. Over the course of the year I have found my fitness level has improved, and I am probably now the fittest I have ever been.
For me, going to Striders has many advantages; structure training programme, delivered by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, the motivation to "get out and do it" (I know what would happen if I was trying to do this alone – NOTHING!!), and the great camaraderie of the other group members. Disadvantages????…………..well, there are none!!
REMEMBER, BELIEVE AND YOU CAN ACHIEVE!!!
Lorna - Leader
Hi Guys, my name is Lorna and I help out as a Motivator for the beginners group at the Killie Striders…
I only took up running in my mid 30s…. (about 10yrs ago now!). I was and still am a full time working mum, but back then I was unfit and overweight and generally unhappy about how I looked and felt. Running was alien to me, but then as now I joined a community team and decided to give it a try.
At first I could only run a minute before my lungs were burning and I was gasping for breath, and had I been on my own then I would most definitely have given up, but being part of a team does make the difference and keeps you wanting to come back for more. Unfortunately the group I was with disbanded and although I continued to run on and off for a few years, it did fall by the wayside not having the help that a structured group can give. That was until I joined the Killie Striders in May 2010 and with Gavin and the rest of the teams help, I am now achieving my goals and improving on them week in and week out, and loving every second of it.
Don't think that just because you cant do it now that you will never do it and so wont bother trying. All of us at Killie Striders are proof that you can!. You will never be on your own, you will always have support and ultimately you will succeed.
Loura - Leader
Hi I'm Laura (aka Fergie) and I joined Killie Striders in July 2012. I had tried running on my own for a few years without success, and decided to do something about it. I contacted Gavin and plucked up the courage to go along to a Killie Striders session, and I absolutely loved it! Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and supportive.
At first I could only run for a short period of time, however I was soon achieving goals that I didn't think I was capable of which was a great boost to my confidence. It wasn't long before I was encouraged to sign up to run my first 10k, and I can't describe the sense of achievement I felt when I crossed the finish line that day. Since then I have gone on to run half marathons and would love to eventually run a full marathon one day!
I wouldn't have been able to achieve any of this if it wasn't for the support and encouragement of the group. For me Killie Striders is a great way to exercise in the outdoors with a lovely bunch of people. Sessions are fun, challenging, well structured and provide the support needed to achieve success.
Janis - Leader
Hi everyone. My name is Janis and if you'd told me 2 years ago that I'd be motivating groups of runners I would have laughed! I joined Killie Striders in August 2011 after I saw a flyer advertising a taster session. I had never run in my life and never thought I could. I used to see people out running and think "I wish I could do that" but never had the confidence to try.
I can honestly say that joining Killie Striders was the best decision I ever made. I can't imagine my life without running now! I started out not being able to run for more than a minute and progressed to running my first 10k in 2012 and I haven't looked back. I'm planning my first half marathon later this year. I have made some fantastic friends and the enthusiasm and encouragement from all the jog leaders and other members of the group has been amazing. Now I'm looking forward to helping other people experience that "runner's high" - come along and join us - I can promise you won't regret it!
